The Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Florence is a leading academic and research institution located at the Scientific Campus of Sesto Fiorentino, with its Astronomy and Astrophysics division based in the historic site of Arcetri. The Department carries out research across a broad range of fields, including theoretical and experimental physics, astrophysics, quantum science, nuclear and particle physics, condensed matter, and applied physics.
It works in close collaboration with major national research institutions such as CNR, INFN, and INAF, as well as with the European Laboratory for Non-linear Spectroscopy (LENS). The Department is actively involved in national and international research projects and offers comprehensive undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. Through its strong scientific tradition and interdisciplinary approach, it contributes significantly to both fundamental research and technological innovation.
