He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Catania, where his early research was in nuclear physics, and later moved toward the theory of ultracold atomic gases, Bose\u2013Einstein condensates, and macroscopic quantum phenomena. After postdoctoral work in the United States at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he developed a research program centered on quantum coherence, entanglement, and precision measurements. His work has helped establish entanglement and quantum Fisher information as fundamental resources for quantum-enhanced metrology.
